The Right DSLR Camera Settings for Graduation

Graduation day is upon us for many and what better way to commemorate the event than taking pictures of the big day. But when you bring that DSLR camera with you, you need to know the right way to take these photos as well as what some good shots may be.

First of all, aim to get shots of your graduate at different points in the day. From getting ready before hand, to actually getting their diploma handed to them at the ceremony, to the celebrations afterward.  Don’t forget to get shots of yourself and other family members either!

Flash is probably not something you’ll need or want to use. You won’t need it outside before and after the ceremony and it just won’t look good during either. It also can be a bit of a distraction to the graduates walking.  The only time you may want to consider flash is if your subject is wearing a white cap and gown. Otherwise, it’s best to go without for darker gown colors.

Don’t forget that DSLR cameras are great for taking pictures of inanimate objects, like graduation invitations and decor, and making them look really special. It’ll be a nice addition to the rest of the photos in your set.

Go Mirrorless in Photography!

Mirrorless cameras are all the rage . But what are they and why would somebody want to have a camera without mirrors? The answer is simple. No mirrors means less bulk.  The Panasonic GF3 Lumix Camera (with 14mm Pancake Lens) is one of the most popular cameras now. Available in Red, White, and Black, this camera is perfectly portable while shooting incredible SLR-like photos. It has a larger sensor to improve image quality. It’s not as expensive as a regular SLR and it’s especially recommended for beginners and Professionals that want a more compact camera without resorting to a “compact camera”.While the mirrors are gone – either permanently or replaced with electronic alternates – the rest of the features of a DSLR are still there: speedy performance, fast autofocus, manual controls and the ability to change lenses.

Nikon Cameras Make Perfect Gifts

Mother’s Day is only a week away and Father’s Day comes up just a month after that. It’s amazing how fast these holidays come and go but you can get Mom or Dad something very different this year by looking into Nikon cameras.

When was the last time one of your parents bought themselves a new camera? Probably not that recently, unless they are very big on photography. A lot of it is because there’s so much new, it can be hard to know where to start. If they aren’t up to date with the technology, it can be a bit overwhelming. That’s where their kids come in handy. We know a bit more as a younger generation used to all the changes so we can teach them.

We can also be sure to buy them the best Nikon cameras for them. Maybe Mom is more of a point and shoot person but Dad would really enjoy DSLR cameras because he’d love to learn all the features and take more professional shots. You know your parents best and what they’d really love. And they’ll appreciate the thought you put into their gift this year. It’ll be something a little different from what they are used to.

Photo Albums and Frames For Mother’s Day

All of those wonderful pictures you took with your DSLR camera  need to be put somewhere. And mom has always loved keeping her family close by displaying pictures.  In the end, they make fantastic keepsakes. My mom held on to her albums for years and we still have them in our attic. Wouldn’t you love to see that the pictures you took from that one vacation or the big anniversary party are still around years from now?

For Mother’s day, there’s no better gift than a great frame for that one family photo where everyone finally got together, or a photo album for the entire day’s events. There are a lot of different styles to get, from a collage frame that can add a bit more of an interesting look to the room, or a photo album with a beautiful pattern across the front that will make it stand out from all the rest.

A great way to accentuate the gift is to add your own photos first. Giving mom a partially full album can give you guys time to sit down and go through the memories together, while still giving her space to add photos as she chooses. She’ll love the thought and time you put into it!

Photography Equipment and Tripods for Vacation

When you head off on vacation to somewhere you’ve never been before, the first thing you think to pack is your DSLR camera and your photography equipment. You want to take home some fantastic shots that will not only keep the memory of the trip alive for you, but that you can show off to friends and family.  And part of that equipment should be the inclusion of tripods.

Tripods and other supports are necessary for that perfect shot. First, it makes it a lot of easier for you to get into your own shot instead of always being behind the camera. You can just line up the perfect shot, set a timer, and jump in with the rest of your family.

It is also ideal to get the perfect shot in terms of moving objects or lights. Fireworks, for instance, are much easier to photograph with support. With flash off, any slight shaking of the hand can cause a blurry image of just random streaks in the sky. It really takes away from the effect you were going for.

Don’t shun the tripod the next time you travel. There are plenty of tripods that are made to break down or fold easily so you can pack it and bring it along.

Colored Filters for Your DSLR Cameras

DSLR cameras are fantastic to use because they really open you up to a world of possibilities with your photography. When you first bought your DSLR, you may have stuck with the basics and only the features given on the actual camera.  But as you used it more, you may have been wanting to buy more accessories and really expand your repertoire. Colored filters can be a really fun choice when it comes to creating new and exciting photographs.

Colored filters can change up your photos a great deal, in a way you’ll really love.  Red filters, for example,  increase contrast effectively and are great for dramatic clouds in landscape photos. Yellow filters create a very distinct contrast between a blue sky and the foreground. Green corrects skin tones and brings out facial expressions. It’s great for the actual subjects in the photo and perfect for indoor lighting.

When choosing colored filters, keep in mind that each color often has multiple filter options that create slightly different adjustments in their effects.  Be sure to really test out each and see how they can change the view completely. Your DSLR cameras can really take on a brand new dimension with a new filter or two.

Wedding Photography Tips for the Spring

Spring is here and it’s the biggest season for weddings. And if you are going to be considering doing some of your own wedding photography, whether freelance or just to cover your own event, there’s some things you should keep in mind.

DSLR cameras, first of all, are the equipment of choice. A point and shoot digital camera is just not going to get you the shots you want. There’s something about the quality of pictures that a DSLR can provide that you just won’t get from any other digital camera.

Try documenting different stages of the wedding instead of just what is going on for the actual ceremony and reception. Take pictures of the hair being done, the makeup being applied, the nervous groom before he steps out for the ceremony, the guests filing in. These will make for more interesting photos than just the wedding ceremony itself.

Lighting might be more of an issue because you can’t control it all. You have to deal with certain lighting outdoors, during the ceremony, and other lighting at the reception. A fill flash is a good option to have and pushing the ISO higher on your DSLR camera if the lighting indoors isn’t as good.

Learning Photography From The Masters

As with most forms of art, one of the best ways to get into a great place with photography is to explore what makes some of your favorite artists’ work so good. Musicians will sit down with records and figure out how say Keith Richards or Tina Weymouth played their instrument. They will also explore what equipment each used to get a specific sound. For photographers things are almost exactly the same. You explore the compositional styles and techniques that your favorite photographers use and then look into the sorts of photography equipment they used to get there.

Whether your photographic influences are Henri Cartier-Bresson’s stunning minimal scenes or the vibrant highly defined portraiture of Annie Lebovitz, there is much that you can learn about using photography equipment and structure from just studying their photos.

As you come to learn how your favorite artists use their Canon SLR cameras, or might have used them assuming they are of an older generation, you can then begin to break away by following your own artistic guidelines. Eventually you will find yourself making huge leaps forward but not without standing on the shoulders of photographers past. The rich history of photography can be a great asset for young shutterbugs just starting out.
